18K and knocked out
Saturday morning and Team Kennedy manager bashed out another 10K and is goading me to get out there.....I slip on my trainers and sneak out for a cheeky 18K.....That'll teach her.
I'm 24:30 for 5K and while a little breathless at the top of the hill I'm OK and the time is a good pace for 18K for me. At about the 8K mark I'm starting to feel a bit weak. I know that as it was unplanned training session that I haven't really eaten or drank enough in the morning.
Two bits of toast and a cup of tea is just not the right start. At 11K I'm at 1hr 01 minute and my head is spinning and legs feel like jelly. I could stop and just throw up right on the site of Napoleon's greatest defeat if my stomach wasn't empty.
I just keep running and luckily there is no wind so I'm just fighting gravity all the way down the N5. At 14K I get a bit of a second wind but only in my legs, my head is still out of it. I have to crawl up the last hill with 1K to go and my legs are very heavy and all my joints feel like they are rusty so it takes enormous efforts just to move my limbs.
I finish in 1:40:01 and I'm really dying....totally wiped out. Legs killing me, head thumping and heart rate soaring. Quick drink , shower and bed for an hour....Sunday I was sore all over and blanked it all out using paracetamol and a couple of glasses of vin rouge.

It seems the gap between posts is getting wider and wider which can only mean one thing.... you need to sign up for the next event :) or come this time next year Team Kennedy Manager will be training with me for her first ironman :)
ReplyDeleteHope you are keeping well and fit !! Not that I would like to add any peer pressure but I just banked a 100 k cycling ride today followed by a 20 k run. Looking forward to your next post :) :)
Philippe
good man, I did a 10K run with Stu on Sunday 16th in Scotland but that was it. I did see you two or three weeks ago on the bike on Sunday weaving through the garden visitors in Lasne but you didn't see me in the car.
ReplyDeleteSadly travelling a lot with work so not much chance for personal time. Looks like you're ready for the big one again.
Did you make any changes to your bike ?
No didn't see you :( Was trying to swirve around the cars as fast as possible to keep my rythm.
ReplyDeleteI think I am ready for the big one. I don't feel as fit as last year but definitely more muscular.
So it will be interesting to see the end result.
As far as the bike is concerned I was on the verge to buy an aero disc for the back wheel at http://www.wheelbuilder.com/store/aero-disc-covers.html. The price seemed to be amazingly good for the performance but eventually decided that the cons would outweigh the pros. It's very difficult to steer in crosswinds as we have most of the time in Belgium and there is a price to pay for the additional weight in the Swiss mountains. So I decided against it. Maybe next year for my first full ironman :) I still want to do a full one, whether I am capable of it is a different story but in the end I believe it is the ultimate goal of any triathlete to do a full ironman. So I would like to attempt it at one point in my life and hopefully next year. Maybe with you. :) Earlier I was reading about this american guy who finished an ironman at 82 so I figured if he can do it I should be able to do it.
Anyways I always enjoy reading your posts here. And I hope when workload allows you will be able to train for whatever next event you have in mind.
Cheers
Philippe
You'll be fine, that ability to drive yourself on will get you there and I'm sure the witches on the hill will be shouting to get you up to the top.
ReplyDeleteI just can't imagine getting the time and more importantly the drive for me to do the training needed to get to a full ironman level.
I'm sweating at the thought :O) I'll keep an eye out for the results but fire me a text if you get your breath back. We'll all be thinking about you on the day. :O) Huup Huup Huup !!!
