Hot hot hot...18K that I cut short to 14K as it was too hot. Legs were dying and its due to lack of stamina. Felt like I hadn't eaten enough but that wasn't true. Clearly your body builds up energy stores as you get fitter and my stores are dropping as I get less fit.....
Hat Tip to Philippe for finishing Rapperswil Ironman in Switzerland again on Sunday. 30C+ heat so must have felt like forever out there. Running down past the train lines through the high rise buildings must have been like an oven...Well done :O) and yes I'm jealous.

Thanks mate!!! It was a tough one for me. I'd secretly hoped to beat last year's record but I knew from the second lap on the bike it wouldn't be for this year. I am still not sure what went wrong except the temperature was tough to put up with. I just couldn't keep my rythm for some reason.I guess I need my training / racing partner back for the next event. Last year you pushed me in the training and racing and I would never have achieved the same result without you.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping we can do the next one together, in Alaska hopefully :)
Take care,
Philippe
Heat makes a big big difference, I remember how much harder the run in Brasschat was over Switzerland due to it being 30C.
ReplyDeleteYou don't really notice it when you are on the bike as the air cools you but you lose so much fluid on the bike run. Then you just start to sieze up and there is no way to take that much on to make up the difference without risking throwing up on the bike. I felt like I weighed about 50% more on the run.
Your split times on the run were good as your second half was faster. So you didn't die on your feet.
Alaska ? Is there not one thats further away :O)
Thanks mate ! The temperature was indeed very tough to handle for me. For some reason it did not bother the top guys so much. After the bike leg I realised I would not beat my personal best so I decided to take it easy and splash myself with suntan cream so I would not get burnt which shows in the transition time as I ended up last.
ReplyDeleteOn the run I stopped at every transition to cool down until the last kilometre where I figured out I had to kick it in to stay ahead of my brother.
That being said, I have to congratulate my brother for his finishing time. He barely trained. Only had two bike sessions and 6 x 10 k runs so I am really impressed. Especially since he is totally blind in the water. This time I will try to stay fit over the winter and maybe next year I can dream :) to get close to my 2009 time. And hopefully we can train together for our next triathlon in Alaska :) or Norway.
Take care mate,
Philippe
